Education & Vocational Skills Training

Community Development and Humanitarian Network (CoDHNet) believes that promoting education is one of the most important means to overcome and fight ignorance and poverty, with this in mind,Our education projects covers a range of activities, including basic literacy and life skills through both formal and non-formal systems, education grants and fee support, teacher training support, distribution of school learning materials, construction and rehabilitation of school infrastructures as well as support to school feeding programs.

CoDHNet Organization continues to renovate old and abandoned schools, build new schools and operate and manage schools, cultural centers and institutions. Because of our work, tens of thousands of children are able to attend these schools in various regions of Somalia. 

With the awareness that Education is the utmost tool to fight against ignorance, economic backwardness  and social issues. While at the same time enhancing capacity building and producing qualified human resources. Community Development and Humanitarian Network (CoDHNet)  cooperates with the target communities in the building of schools, Educational and cultural centers and institution. Already CoDHNet succeeded to build a number of schools and Educational institutions in the various provinces of Somalia.

Objectives in Education

Improving Access To Basic Education

With collaboration and support from partners in the education sector, through contributing to improving education CoDHNet were able to reach thousands of children, youth, and adults from IDPs, refugees and host communities.

Community Development and Humanitarian Network (CoDHNet) improves access to education by taking part in the extensive establishment of infrastructure including building temporary schools and latrines; and Provide furniture for the temporary schools and distribute didactical materials. The furniture’s distributed to the schools include blackboards, mats for sitting on, school bells, note books and pens for teachers and the deductible materials which are given to the most vulnerable children, they include pens, note books and basic books. Other activities include: Recruitment of teachers and educators.

Advocacy and Capacity Building

CoDHNet conducts advocacy and capacity building trainings and campaigns to the teachers, students, Community Education committees and the community at large. These include: Training teachers on Education, the rights of women and children, child protection, , SGBV, health, hygiene, sanitation and peace promotion; Awareness raising for the students and the community on Education, the rights of children and women,, SGBV, health, hygiene and sanitation, peace promotion in the constructed schools, and trainings the Community Education Committee on record keeping, school management and disaster risk preparedness and response. It’s a comprehensive approach but unfortunately not a lot of donors are willing to fund education sector in Somalia as they think there are more priorities such as livelihoods.

School Feeding Programme (SFP)

CoDHNet launched School Feeding Programme (SFP) to support and provide close to 1000 school-aged children in Dolow District, Gedo Region of Somalia with free of charge quality education and nutrition through School Feeding Programme (SFP) to ensure the fundamental right with especial attention given to the safety and wellbeing of the children living in Dolow IDP camps…

At a time when record numbers are fleeing their homes, we help millions of people every year. Each one of them has a story. Since school feeding programme was introduced to drought affected schools in Dolow, children’s access to education has improved in the area. CoDHNet are currently implemented school feeding programme at Qansahley IDP Primary School in Dolow District with the objective of  improved educational attainment, safety of Somali girls and boys affected by crises, contributing to resilience building within increasingly peaceful, secure and democratic environment.

The project has four (4) outcomes; a) Increase equitable access to education, b) improve quality learning outcomes, c) Increase gender equity and equality and d) Safe Re-opening schools. One of the key outputs under outcome I is the provision of school feeding programme to crises-effected children in target schools. Interviews made with some of the head teachers show that both children’s daily attendance and enrolment improved. Mr. Mohamed Osman De’es, headteacher of Qansaley IDP Primary School appreciates the humanitarian support extended to his school. He narrates how the school feeding programme helped improve school attendance and enrolment. School enrolment started falling from May 2020 and reached its worst in June 2020. Without this humanitarian intervention the situation would have been even worse. In June 2020, the school enrolment was 172 (71 girls and 101 boys). He said the enrolment started improving as soon as the school feeding programme commenced in the school. The programme began in August 2020 and within August 2020 the enrolment rose to 396 of whom 193 were girls. The headteacher explained how provision of food to pupils of Qansahley Primary School improved school attendance. He said all class attendance registers show reduced school absenteeism and Weekly absenteeism rate now reduced from 5% to 0.3%. According to the headteacher, provision of nutritious food also improved the wellbeing of children. He said number of school children missing lessons because of illness reduced. Interviews held with other teachers also show similar improvement in enrolment, attendance and wellbeing of children.

Vocational Skills Training Courses

CoDHNet Provides Vocational Skills Trainings Including Carpentry, plumbing, beauty salon, tie and dye, basic electricity installation, mobile repair, poultry farming, Technology skills and Multy-Sory gardens/Kitchen Gardening skills. As CoDHNet, Our activities include providing startup tool kits and usually accompany with trainings on modern vocational skills training courses and farming techniques. This has enabled the communities to become more self-sufficient through productive farming and employment opportunity. CoDHNet has been over the years working closely with the community to facilitate for Job Readiness technical trainings for Woman, and Youths.

By the end of the every vocational skills training courses CoDHNet provides startup kits to the trainees for job creation and the community members usually contribute to the work by providing labour which earns them income. These programmes closely involve communities through the establishment of community committees who are involved in the job placemen to the trainees.
